The gift of Art with Easy Canvas Prints

Right around August, I received an email from Easy Canvas Prints. Until this point, I had never heard of the company but once I took a gander at the website, I thought it was a very cool and innovative artistic idea. I was able to sample just how the set-up works and found the end result to be very cool and a tool that can be used for some really great things.



How it works:
You choose a photo from your collection that you would like to have as a tangible piece to hang in your house, apt., work space, etc. Easy Canvas gives their customers an alternative to the typical print in a frame to hang on the wall. Of course, I chose a picture of a pair of Mary-Jane Platform Stilettos. The process of choosing the size, medium, if you want it wrapped and any other specs you want for your custom masterpiece. Once my order was placed, I received the canvas in a shorter amount of time than what was estimated, (which is ALWAYS great) and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the photo given its canvas backing.

Black Models of 1973 Fashion Show Honored



The Versailles models of 1973 were honored this week at the Huffington Post Game Changers Awards last night. Why is this important and who are the Versailles models, you ask?
The 11 African-Americans models were part of the legendary Grand Divertissement à Versailles fashion show held in 1973 at the Palace of Versailles to raise money for its restoration. It featured 5 American designers (Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein, and African-American designer Stephen Burrows) and 5 French designers including Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior’s head designer Marc Bohan, Hubert de Givenchy, Emanuel Ungaro and Pierre Cardin.
Back then, it was rare to see Black women modeling on the catwalk but the American designers decided to take advantage of the international spotlight and make a statement about diversity. They hired 11 Black models to walk their shows, while the French used not a single one.

What is a Fashion Photograph?

What is a fashion photograph?

Great fashion photographs are a reflection of the moral, social and economic imperatives of our time in a way that other photographic genres are not. From war time to economic booms fashion photography has shown us where our boundaries were and how we alternately sought to embrace or break them.
Beyond addressing larger social mores a great fashion photograph is about lifestyle, desire, fantasy, sensuality, and, unavoidably, commerce. It is about wanting to be the person inside in the clothes, or wanting to have the life shown within the image. It is also about identity, individuality, subculture and the desire to belong. A fashion photograph is quite simply one of the best arbiters of the time in which we live and have lived.
There are a million small details that go into the creation of a great fashion image. Once you get past casting, make-up, styling, lighting, teamwork and the other technical and pre- and post-production issues, there is the movement of the garment, the gesture, the turn of a head, the gaze, the personality of the model, and the social and commercial concepts that the image define. A great portrait informs and entertains, but a fashion photograph engenders a much larger conversation.
Fashion will always have the ability to press and break boundaries. As our social mores change the envelope within which fashion exists changes as well. There will always be boundaries to push against, and designers and image makers willing to test those boundaries. This exploration does not always need to involve shock though, as companies such as Benneton, Kenneth Cole, and Prada have shown, fashion has an enormous capacity to address social issues in a diverse and intelligent manner.
In terms of the freedom in fashion to explore, the essence of creativity is freedom. Without the ability to challenge one’s own boundaries one loses the chance to be truly creative.  The beauty of fashion and fashion photography is that it allows its creators to indulge their creative capacity on so many levels. It is this freedom that has allowed for the creation of so many fashion images and campaigns that have endeared, challenged, and engaged us over the years, and what gives fashion photography its unique and powerful voice.

That Sweater at the MLK Jr. Dedication



Can we just take a moment to marvel over the simple but FABULOUS cardigan Mrs. Obama wore to the MLK Jr. Dedication in Washington D.C. this past weekend. President Obama and family took a tour on the mall before making his unforgettable speech addressing current affairs and how many things have and haven't no changed from 50 years ago when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. worked tirelessly with others to create a long-lasting change for the under-served people in this country.

I understand the sentiment of this day, and I am very proud of the positive images that spread across the world of African Americans and our contributions and importance in the making, maintaining and the future of this country, but what I really understand is this magnificent cardigan! Thank You Thank You Thank You!

And to Dr. King, THANK YOU for all that you gave, sacrificed, fought for, endured, and changed. Your legacy is permanent in the lives of many and generations to come!

Typography



Delving deeper and deeper into discovering my passion and setting the path for my career, my researching is showing me just how important the details are for a successful package. I've always wondered about certain fonts, letters, letter order and naming and as I'm learning what really goes into it all... I'm more and more amazed by the genius of it all.

Complexity shown as pure simplicity. Large brands have really got it down in terms of type, font, color and names... the simplistic complexity of it all excites me.

And so folks... the lesson in this... no matter how bad something SEEMS, never give up and push it until the end because it ain't over until it's OVER. I'm happy K.G. didn't get kicked off cause of a bad day.

Aspiring Models - Do your research



Charlotte, NC has more models per 5 sq. ft than any other place in the world. And that's fine, however, if you're going to call yourself a model, put in the time and effort to study the craft. Draw from different places and inspirations to get better. With so many people aspiring to do the same thing as you, you should figure out what will make YOU stand out. If you look just like the next 5 chics in line, nothing will prompt "she's memorable" at any casting or show. Practice your walk, play with poses in the mirror, pull from an internal place to exude emotion through your photos. Like anything, it will take a lot of work but the end goal makes it all worth it. Being tall, thin or pretty is not enough, especially in Charlotte, NC, USA.
